Can english lavender be split to transplant?

Propagation of this plant is a simple affair. Cuttings can be taken in September or August, or the plant can be carefully divided in the spring. An even simpler way to obtain more of this choice plant is to sow seed in the spring directly where it is to be grown. Plants will grow ten to twelve inches wide within two years of sowing.

In my experiece Lavenders are tricky. Sometimes they grow like gangbusters and can't be killed and get way too big. Other times you whack them and they up and die. Never cut into bare wood(without leaves below).

I think it's a feely thing if they can be divided. You have to check to see if the plant has made a large enough rootball to have multiple stems and roots. If there is just one stem, it's a no go.

On the other hand as stated above Lavenders usually root very well from cuttings depending on the variety. I made about 200 cuttings from a type of French lavender to make hedges for my French clients about 10 years ago. It was amazing!

Good luck :-)
