Lavender is very gentle and mild enough for babies, yes.
smc4u73 - if you can't list a source, than why should we believe you? I'd be happy to change my mind if you can provide me with a link to an abstract or medical article to the contrary, but what you're saying does not agree with anything I've ever read, or the hundreds of baby products out there with lavender in them.
I can find no reputable sources which have any contraindications or warnings for lavender except that they may "increase or potentiate the CNS depressant effects of sedative-hypnotics" http://www.phytotherapies.org/monograph_...
Is it okay to wash a baby in lavender all the time to keep it calm?
NO !! There have been reports ( and I wish I could remember)
that there are some dangers in the chemicals in those lavender baby washes. It is not a good idea. Any doubt for the well-being of your child should be a number 1 priority.
Reply:The only problem I can see is it might dry out baby's skin. There are lavender baby lotions, maybe you can alternate that with the baths.
Reply:Depends on the age of the child and the type of wash.
I started using lavender and chamomile bath and lotion on my son at bedtime around six months, I think. That was after his pediatrician approved it--in very young infants, lavender and chamomile have both been linked to an increase risk of SIDS. I also only used the commercial, Johnsons %26amp; Johnsons type washes and lotions, as they contain NO actual lavender or chamomile, and are less dangerous for baby.
Reply:I washed my son in it when he was a baby all the time and never had a problem. I loved the smell of it. He's 4 now and I am 32 weeks pregnant with a girl and plan on using the same thing :)
Reply:I have been bathing my baby in lavender since she was born. She is almost 5 months old. There has never been any problems.
