Is lavender a herb/spice, or just a plant?

for my food tech

Is lavender a herb/spice, or just a plant?
It's a herb.

The Romans used to use it in their bathwater hence the name lavender because "lava" means to wash in Latin. They then introduced the plant to Britain and monks then used it in their gardens. It is best recorded since Tudor times when people realised it could ease stiff joints and relieve tiredness. It was used for repelling insects and masking household and/or street smells, and was also carried in nosegays to try and ward off the plague and pestilence.

Lavender is sometimes put in biscuits but isn't used in cooking so much in modern times, and is also used to flavour jelly or vinegar.

These days the oil is very popular and although traditionally used to prevent vertigo and fainting it is nowdays used as a remedy for burns and stings, and it's antibacterial action helps kill diphtheria and typhoid bacilli as well as streptococcus and pneumocous.

Oil in bathwater calms and helps sleeping.

When added to massage oil lavender is used in aromotherapy for throat infections, skin sores, inflamation, rheumatic aches, anziety, insomnia and depression.
Reply:It's a plant.... It is used to make lavender oil which is used in aromatherapy. I think that it can be used as an antiseptic as well.

Hope that helps!
Reply:It's a herbaceous plant. It is used as a herb but not a spice.
Reply:just a nice smelling plant
Reply:All plants, which are not trees or grasses, are herbs; a spice is a particular part of a plant used specifically for one purpose .. nutmeg is a plant and a tree, parts of it a used as spices, nutmeg, mace

lavender can be used for a number of purposes and is considered a flavouring herbal spice ..

if you're confused, how do you think I feel, having studied plants, herbs and spices and their uses for over 30 years since I was at Uni as mature student?

now read this and become more confused .. (lol)

Reply:Lavender is a herb (culinary and medicinal) and a flower...

I have a jar of dried lavender flowers in my herb %26amp; spice rack... I would also never dream of buying ready-mixed "herbs de provence" which does not list lavender, because I consider it an imperative addition!

Add a few crumbled lavender flowers to the next mix of shortbread you make... It is a delicious addition!

Medicinally it is very good at soothing headaches and lowering tension levels. It also helps people sleep, which is why it was traditionally added to laundry in cupboards. I use it and often "refresh" lavender bags with lavender oil.
