there are different types of lavender and lavender oil. You want a culinary grade lavender which is available on the net and in some food cooperatives. It's actually lovely with honey, as part of chicken, etc. Please check to see what type you have - perfume oil is not good for you (thankfully you said you added only a small amount but if this is what you used I'd still check potential toxicity. Is lavender ok to eat, as i have just added a small amount to a loaf of bread?
Its perfectly fine to eat as long as it is the herb you are using. What a wonderful aromatic bread!... A popular recipe is to put it into scones and then have with jam and cream like the traditonal English cream tea. Happy baking!
Reply:I use it in baking, cakes, biscuits scones or for flavouring creams ice cream, custard etc. The best way to get the flavour with out eating the flower is to add it to caster or granulated sugar and leave for at least a month. I then sieve it before use for flavourings or for on top of biscuits i just sprinkle it on. You can buy it ready made at many speciality food shops but if you have it growing try it yourself. I also use mint, rosemary, chili.. orange and lemon add to sugar or salt.

Reply:Dried lavender is used in French cooking all the time - it's one of the ingredients in herbes de provence. I'm not sure about using the essential oil - for one, it may be too strong of a flavor. As long as it is PURE I wouldn't worry about it, but if you don't know if there are other ingredient I'd skip it entirely.
Reply:Yes it's fine...I used to add a little (well washed) in running water when I poached pears, just a couple of sprigs...it can be very pungent.

Reply:Yes. it is. You can make tea out of it or use it for flavouring. There are certain varieties that are specifically grown as flavouring and have the best flavour.

Reply:absolutely fine to consume. and it IS good for gastrointestinal troubles (GAS) among a long list of other things. I drink a tea made with it often.

Reply:A small amount won't kill you. In fact it's an ingredient in Herbes de Provence. But don't overdo it as it contains essential oils.
Reply:creative cookery is great but sometimes you have to defer to sense - why would you want lavender bread? lavender is a delicate flavour - you won't even taste the oil in the bread but for heaven's sake only use ingredients meant for eating! you wouldn't use engine oil in place of olive oil would you?
