Oil of Lavender good for storm-crazed dogs?

I have heard that Oil of Lavender is good to calm your dog if a storm makes him/her crazy. You put a couple of drops on his snout or between his/her eyes and it calms. Has any one tried this? They also use this technique for Alzheimer's patients.

Fragrance therapy is good for calmingin a lot of situations, but unfortuantely not very effective for dogs afraid of storms.

Your best bet is to give Benadryl once the storm hits and it should have lasting effects throughout the worst of it.

If the dog is 50 to 80 pounds, give a regular childs' dose, and if he is larger, give the adult dose.

If he is under 50 pounds, break the tablets in half.

Every dog's tolerance to it varies, but if it doesnt make a difference, give another half 1 hour after the first dose.

If this doesnt work well for you, your vet can provide you with Aceprom. tablets. but Benadryl is easier and safer.

Good luck!
Reply:I would think it would work. it helps humans! I know when I apply lavendar oil on my self, my dog calms down.

I would apply the oil to a durag and tie it loosely around the dogs neck....
Reply:My dog was actually diagnosed with Thunder-phobia. dogs are hyper sensitive they know the storm is coming before we do they feel it. oil of lavender may calm the dog momentarily but it is not a fix. You should not console the dog then you would be catering to his fear letting them know it is okay to be afraid. What you should do it ACT normal let the dog know that everything is fine life is still normal nothing different. If the dog is still panicky trying turning the the TV on or radio a little louder than normal to try to block out. But dogs are pack animals and they will take the lead of the pack so if you act normal the dog will follow suit
Reply:I have never tried but, I do know about loud noises driving your dog crazy. I constantly re-assure her that she is "OK" and put her favorite blanket next to her. But as long as your dog doesn't have skin allergies and you don't get it in their mouth or eyes, I don't see what the harm in it would be. You may place a quick call to your vet, just to make sure.
