I am curious to know what type of bee is slurping at my lavender flowers? I?

I had been seeing bumblebee's, but now I see a different type of bee that isnt fuzzy, and there is black and yellow nearer the butt that mesh together in a striped way. They seem a little scarier than the bumble bee in the way that they dart and move. they are not much smaller than the bumblebee, but not as round, more thinner bodied. I cant find any pictures. I live in VA. The bumblebees seem to arrive early in the am but then dissapear when these things come around? thanks.

Check out this link from Wikipedia... I'm sure there are more thorough sources available, but this is one that I have used before.

Reply:They could be yellow jackets or hornets. Both sting when agitated. Your favorite search engine will locate pictures of them for you.
Reply:SOUNDS LIKE A HORNET !!!
