Is it too late in the year to start some lavender?

i just planted some seeds today, theyre "lady" and it say itll bloom within a year, will i see that THIS year or is it too late now that its almost mid-july. i live in cleveland ohio

Spring is the best time to plant seed for perennials. If it had already been started then you might have a chance, but I think it is too late and too hot to start seed now. Who knows. Since you've already sowed the seed then make sure they get daily watering until they germinate and even then you will have to water often. It will probably die back this winter,but if you are lucky it will reemerge next spring. However, you will be looking at a full season without bloom. It will probably be 2009 before it blooms.

Reply:Your plants should be OK, though Lavender does best when planted in late spring or early summer.

Keep in mind that propagation by seed is slow and germination rates are low and sporadic.



They need well-drained soil. Adding lime to acid soils helps improve its chances, since lavender prefers a soil pH of 6.0-8. Don't add additional nitrogen fertilizer; in fact, too much nitrogen can result in less fragrant flowers and plants that are more sensitive to frost and fungal infections.*



When they do get their first buds, cut them off so that the plants can focus their energy on developing strong root and vegetative growth, rather than flowers and seeds.
