What is that lavender mint flower that cats love.... it's kind-of like cat nip?

It grows like a low bush, has minty smelling leaves and lavender flowers? My mom has some (she won't be home for about another month), but I would like to go buy some to plant at my house. It is a flower that comes up every year.

Thank you

Nepeta cataria and Nepeta mussinii are 2 varieties of 'catnip' that cats love.

You'll see these herbaceous perennials flowering during the summer months.

You can buy from most garden centres, and there's an online source here, of the latter - white flowered:

Otherwise, the lavender coloured type I found via Ebay:

The following co. has a few varieties to choose from:

Cats are said to prefer planted out plants, versus seed grown ones, though this may just be superstition! Ultimately, its the aromatic oil within it that drives cats crazy:mine love it!

Good luck! Rob
Reply:Cat mint? It's name is nepeta. You get a white one, besides the traiditonal one and there is also a taller variety.

Reply:Catmint,

Nepeta mussinii

Profuse lavender blooms on spiky stems.

Soft, crinkled, gray-green leaves on a short, mounding plant.

Good in containers, for borders, and the perennial herb garden. Very good choice for a tough, perennial ground cover!

Contains nepetalactone, the active ingredient in catnip that drives cats nuts..

Medicinal: In tea for nervous tension, sleeplessness. Catmint tea will put you to sleep in short order. Do not take this if operating a car or machinery!

The catmint adds blue color to any garden. Works well in hot dry conditiions. Blue Wonder catmint prefers full sun. Another name for the catmint is Nepeta x faassenii.

The many blue flowers each plant produces grows to a height of 12 to 15 inches. Each plant should be spaced 18 inches apart. Recommend you put the plant in well drained soil. It is a perfect plant to place in those dry areas you always forget to water.

The catmint blooms in June and July. Its recommended as ground cover for planting below shrubs. Or it also works as a sunny blue border plant. It is an aromatic plant.

You can remove spent flowers to produce a second bloom. Trim unwanted growth to keep it looking well groomed. The flowers of the catmint tend to be a lavendar color. The leaves are gray-green.
Reply:Catmint. We have one that has gotten pretty good sized, that stays in the sun until late afternoon, and is about 3 years old. I have to admit I'm not great about watering it regularly, but it really doesn't seem to suffer from it.

It also doesn't seem to spread like regular mint will do.
