Where can I get lavender?

Does lavender grow wild, or can you buy lavender plants? I love lavender scented products, but I've read that these don't even smell like real lavender. I'd like to get fresh lavender, or maybe oil. Would I go to a nursery (I don't even know if they're open here year-round in the midwest). If I buy it and plant it, what is the best time to do that - can it even survive in climates like Ohio?

Where can I get lavender?
It will grow great in Ohio. We got some a few years ago from a local greenhouse. We didn't get them all in and there were a couple that were tossed in the corner by the garage. The plant comes back every year and it's still in it's original pot! We are in NE Ohio in zone 5/6 about 15 miles south of Lake Erie.

Reply:Yes you can grow it in Ohio. I grew some here in CT with great success. If you plant from seed it takes a year for the flowers to come. You can get it from most garden centers. It does come back every year.

The essentail oil you can buy from any health food stores. A little goes along way. You want to cut it with another oil before you use it. Allot of new age stores that sell herbs should keep it in stock. If you just want the flower part, to make tea's or pillows etc..

Your not going to find it growing in the wild in your area.

Reply:I had a hard time finding Lavender also, then I was told that it's an Herb.., Wherever you go, look in the herb area. It is also a perennial, and will come back next year.
Reply:You can buy lavender plants (there are different types) at just about any nursery. You could also order through a nursery catalog or online. It would do well in Ohio I think, they're pretty hardy plants. I'm in Maryland and mine grow like weeds . Of course if it's planted in the ground, it will die out in the winter, but it will be back in spring. You can also plant them in pots and bring them in during the winter. Good luck! They're great plants, easy to grow, low maintenance, and smell wonderful.

I've always bought mine in person at nurseries, but here is a site where I've bought other plants and seeds. It's a reputable company that's been around for some time.
