How can I get to the lavender fields/countryside from Aix-en-Provence?

My boyfriend and I are visiting Aix-en-Provence in the first week of July, and he doesn't feel comfortable renting a car, so we have to rely on public transportation. Does anyone know how we can get from Aix to the country? I'm sorry if the question is naive- but I'd really love to see some of Provence's natural beauty.

A beautiful place to see the lavender fields is the Abbaye de Senaque. It's a beautiful 12th century abbey nestled in the hills just outside of the town that many say is the most beautiful in all of France - Gordes. You should be there at a good time to see the lavender. We were there in early June last year and the color was just starting to come out. So, by July, it should be perfect!

Around there, there are the beautiful towns of the Luberon Regional Park, including Roussillon, Bonnieux, Menerbes, Lacoste, and Oppede. All of these towns are within a 10-15 minute drive of each other. Last year, we even rented bikes for an afternoon in Bonnieux and rode to Menerbes, Lacoste, Oppede, and back.

I don't know what to recommend as far as a tour bus or anything like that. We rented a car for the 2 weeks we were there and didn't have any problems. You just need to be somewhat comfortable with a manual transmission. The rental car will also be MUCH cheaper than any tour bus and give you more freedom to explore. We only paid about €20-€25 per day for a compact car from Avis at the Nice airport. If you did decide to drive, Gordes is only 1 hour from Aix - and most of that drive is on the highway.
