I love lavender, and have tried without success to maintain it healthy...?

Everytime I buy a lavender plant, I take care as per instruction, making sure is on the righ spot in the garden and waiting for a little while so that I can transplant from pot to soil, but it always dries up in the pot.

I live in Southern california, so the weather is good for this type of herb, I really would like some gardening tips to make my lavender last and grow healthy and beautiful. Can anyone advice? Also any good books on how to grow an herb garden? Thank you much :)

Reply:I transplant them as soon as I get them home from the nursery. It sounds like the plants are not getting enough water, since you say they are drying up in the pot. They are very strong and hardy plants. I have one in my garden that I planted almost 10 years ago.
Reply:I have 15 year old lavander in my yard. I live in Wisconsin and leave it out all year long with out any trouble. When I get a new variety I let mine sit in pot until I am ready to plant it in the ground, if it is more than a day you should be watering it in the pot.

Are you cutting it back in the fall? Are you looking for Lavander that is native to your climate?
Reply:I lived in CA also for a time and I have planted it and it was very easy. I planted it in a place where the sun didn't hit it all day.
Reply:Try water.
Reply:Any bulb plants such as lilies and lilacs are easy to maintain.

Then, there are the various type of roses that you may consider. Herbs such as rose mary, mulberry, blackberry, celery and onions would be a treat.

Reply:Plant it in the ground.. Just buy it and plant it.
Reply:Don,t put it in a clay pot it will dry up any water you put in it, It goes out the side and it looks like it has water when the roots don,t get enough water, Try a black plastic pot and It will grow when you get ready to transplant good luck, Hope this helps, Also use miracle grow
Reply:Try this website. I love lavender too.
