I always noticed that. Can i plant bergamot? I never saw it for sale in the burpee catalog.

Reply:Bergamot is an essential oil from the fruit of a citrus tree, Citrus aurantium bergamia. I suppose you could plant one if you could find the seeds, or if you could get a seedling. As to why it smells like lavender to you - odors are subjective, just as colors or tastes are.

This tree is native to South East Asia, but was introduced to Europe, and particularly Italy and is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.



Bergamot oil is made from a tree that can grow up to four meters high, with star-shaped flowers and smooth leaves, bearing citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but in a pear-shape. The fruit ripens from green to yellow.



The oil is one of the most widely used in the perfumery and toiletry industry and forms, together with neroli and lavender, the main ingredient for the classical 4711 Eau-de-cologne fragrance. It is used to flavor Earl Grey tea.



The name is derived from the city Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where the oil was first sold.



I love the smell of Bergamot and use Sarah Jessica Parker's perfume called "Lovely" because it has a lot of Bergamot oil in it.

Its name is derived from its odor. This is not the same as Bergamot Orange which is a citrus which also has an aromatic oder similar to the herb. Both are used in making certain teas.

The herb is fairly common and you should be able grow it with no problem.
